Are UV Rays Bad For Your Eyes?

CONSTANT UV EXPOSURE

The sun isn't just dangerous for your eyes in summer. We are exposed to UV rays during daylight hours all year round. And, just like our skin, our eyes can only take so much.

TYPES OF UV

There are several types of ultraviolet rays - UVA, UVB and UVC. UVC is the most energetic and thus the most potentially dangerous, but it is almost entirely filtered by the atmosphere. UVA on the other represents 95% of the UV radiation that reaches us. UVA can penetrate internal tissues, reaching the eye's crystalline lens in adults and the retina in children.

EYE RISKS
These rays hit your eyes directly (with varying intensity depending on the season or location), by diffusion (depending on cloud coverage) or by reflection (depending on the surface: the reflections are 7 times more intense on snow than on water!).

Yet, the harmful effects of UV rays often only show up later, sometimes in ways that are difficult to detect: excessively watery eyes, sensitivity to light, redness that may lead to infection.

And there are many known risks: melanoma on the eyelids, inflammation of the mucous membrane and conjunctivitis, chronic keratitis (inflammation of the cornea) and cataracts.

EYE PROTECTION

To help protect your eyes, consider wearing sunglasses. But beware of cheap pairs! Their tint, dark as it may be, isn't linked to the level of UV protection. UV protection depends on the material the glasses are made from and the quality of their coating treatments, in particular their anti-reflective coating.
